Little Harbour (L’Ardoise) Reconstruction
Harbourside Engineering was engaged as the prime consultant for the reconstruction of the existing timber cribwork marginal wharf on the west side of Little Harbour (L’Ardoise) in Richmond County, Nova Scotia. The services provided can be broken down into distinct phases: pre-design services, design services, tender support, contract administration, and construction services. Design work for this project was completed in February 2020, and construction finished in November 2023.
Carmanville Wharf Reconstruction
Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours, engaged Harbourside to develop a tender package to reconstruct the small harbour wharf in Carmanville with a goal of accommodating larger Canadian Coast Guard vessels, upgrading fendering and mooring systems, and raising deck elevation to address sea level rise. This active commercial fishing facility acts as the Canadian Coast Guard’s primary port for the north coast of Newfoundland, and accommodates the Argentia Desgagnés, a 119m-long cargo ship supplying all road salt to the island.
Westport Wharf Reconstruction
Harbourside was engaged as the primary consultant by Small Craft Harbours, Fisheries and Oceans Canada to complete the planning, design, and contract administration for the reconstruction of the wharf in Westport, Newfoundland. After developing the construction documents, Harbourside Engineering completed the initial inspection of the existing structure, then completed all preliminary and detailed design work and tender preparation (including drawings, specifications, and cost estimate) for the replacement structure.
Cabot Shores: Malpeque Harbour Development
Malpeque Cove Harbour, Prince Edward Island, is a critical area for fisheries and aquaculture, yet accessing the cove through the Damley Channel has proven dangerous for boat passage for many years. Harbourside Engineering Consultants and MRSB Consulting Services Inc. were engaged to conduct an Economic Impact Study and New Wharf Design for the Malpeque Harbour Authority in 2019. The new Cabot Shores Harbour design will help boost the local economy, increase efficiency, and make life easier for local fishing boats and leisure craft.
Hampton Structures 404 & 603 Reconstruction
In 2022, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours, noted that structure 404 (a pier) and structure 603 (a marginal wharf) were in poor condition at Hampton Harbour, Nova Scotia. Harbourside was hired to design the reconstructed structures, including the removal and reconstruction of the armour stone revetment at Structure 603 and tie-ins to existing structures on three sides. The design was completed in February 2023, and a final structural tender package was prepared in April 2023.
Old Champlain Bridge Deconstruction
Harbourside Engineering was named as Deconstruction Engineers for the Old Champlain Bridge, which joined Brossard to Montréal, Québec, and spanned the active St. Lawrence Seaway Navigation Channel as the busiest vehicular bridge in Canada. Reports indicated hazards related to the structure of the bridge, with partial or complete collapse being a legitimate risk. Its demolition ensured the safety of Québec residents, and Harbourside was awarded the 2023 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering as a result of this project.
Highway 104 Twinning (Part 3)
The Highway 104 Twinning Project was a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Maintain (DBFOM) project, including twinning the 100 series highway between Sutherlands River and Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with new interchanges and bridges. Working as part of the Dexter Nova Alliance (DNA), Harbourside Engineering Group completed the design of bridge structures, and was awarded the 2025 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Excellence in Engineering for this project.
Feltzen South EII Reconstruction
Harbourside Engineering Consultants was hired by Public Works and Government Services Canada on behalf of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours, to design a replacement structure for the Feltzen South Ell Wharf in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. The reconstruction of the wharf and the added breakwater help support local fishers by modernizing and updating outdated infrastructure. Construction was completed during the first two weeks of lobster fishing season, the harbour’s busiest months, in December 2022.
Saint-Édouard-De-Kent Containment Cell
A new containment cell for dredge spoils was needed at the Saint-Édouard-de-Kent Harbour in Kent County, New Brunswick. Public Services and Procurement and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours, retained Harbourside Engineering Consultants for this project in 2021. The initial work included a topographic survey of the site, a geotechnical investigation inclusive of test pits, collection of soils samples, and the development of a tender package to replace the existing containment cell.
Université Sainte-Anne Track and Field Facility
Harbourside was retained by Tate Engineering as part of the design of the Université Sainte-Anne track and field facility in Church Point, Nova Scotia. Harbourside provided recommendations and construction supervision to limit settlements and meet the strict track requirements despite the poor native soil conditions and low-quality fills on the site at the start of the work. Harbourside’s scope of work included carrying out a geotechnical test pit investigation, site inspection, and engineering recommendations for soft soil conditions.
Groundhog River Bridge Demolition
When the former Groundhog River Bridge, a vital piece of infrastructure on the Trans-Canada Highway in Fauquier, Ontario, approached the end of its service life, Harbourside was contracted in 2021 by Facca Incorporated to provide alternative options for demolition. Harbourside proposed a de-launch methodology that allowed for de-launch of the bridge superstructure on the approaches. Harbourside conducted a full analysis of the bridge during all phases of the demolition, as well as a full floating stability analysis for the barges supporting the bridge.
Peggy’s Cove Infrastructure Improvements
Peggy’s Cove is one of Nova Scotia’s most iconic tourist attractions, drawing approximately 700,000 visitors annually. In recent years, the popularity of Peggy’s Cove has created issues in relation to crowds, traffic, servicing, and vehicular and pedestrian infrastructure. To address this, Develop Nova Scotia commissioned the Peggy’s Cove Master Plan, where Harbourside led the design, tendering and construction management of a variety of infrastructure improvements at Peggy’s Cove. Harbourside, in collaboration with Englobe Corporation, was named the 2023 recipient of the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering for this project.
McNamara Drive Roundabout Design
To improve the traffic flow through Paradise, Newfoundland, a roundabout was planned for the intersection of Topsail Road and McNamara Drive. Harbourside Transportation Consultants provided the design of the new roundabout, which would also grant access to the new Intermediate School in Paradise. The work entailed upgrades to the intersection, the access road, and the services to the new school. The design and construction of the McNamara roundabout helped improve Paradise’ overall road networks and provides accessibility to the new Intermediate School.
Canada Border Services Agency Warehouse
Harbourside carried out a geotechnical investigation for the new Canada Border Services Agency container examination facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The project required multiple specializations, and Harbourside handled the project management in conjunction with the Halifax Port Authority. Harbourside Project Management acted as the owner representative for this project, the associated developments at the PSA maintenance garage, and the South End Container Crane Stowage Foundations, all of which were completed by 2023.
Pier C Terminal Expansion
Harbourside provided geotechnical and site services to the Halifax Port Authority related to the construction of the Pier C Extension for the Port of Halifax’s South End Container Terminal in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from 2018 to 2020. The purpose of the geotechnical investigation was to assess the subsurface soil and bedrock conditions at the site and to provide geotechnical recommendations to aid with the design and construction of the extension. This expansion will help create new jobs and provide further opportunity for growth throughout the Maritimes.
Paradise Intermediate School Roundabout Design
Harbourside provided the detailed design of the new roundabout on McNamara Drive for the Paradise Intermediate School in Newfoundland. The work included upgrades to the intersection and the access road, and servicing to the new school in the form of water main installation, storm water collection and conveyance, and wastewater collection. Harbourside created the detailed design of single lane roundabout at the intersection of McNamara Drive and new access road, with the provision of expansion to a multi lane roundabout for the future.
Team Gushue Highway Interchange Study
Harbourside Transportation Consultants was retained by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Transportation and Works to complete a detailed traffic analysis on the Team Gushue Highway and the existing Pitts Memorial Drive and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive interchange. Work began with a review of past transportation planning documents, models, and traffic studies followed by stakeholder consultations to identify regional growth and development projections. The end goal was to develop alternatives for connecting these and ancillary roadways.
Halifax Harbour Bridges : Annual Inspections
Harbourside Engineering Consultants has completed annual structural inspections of both the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge and the A. Murray MacKay Bridge in Halifax, Nova Scotia, owned and operated by Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB), from 2010 to present. As the two main connectors between peninsular Halifax and the city of Dartmouth, the municipality is dependent on the continued operations of both bridges. Inspection reporting includes element condition, defect identification, and recommended maintenance.
Port of Charlottetown Cruise Berth Expansion
The Port of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, has seen significant growth in the cruise ship business and as a result, the Charlottetown Harbour Authority Inc. proceeded with an expansion of the facility. Harbourside worked collaboratively with the CHAI throughout a feasibility study to determine how best to provide a second berthing face for their main industries. This expansion ensures that Charlottetown’s tourism industry can continue to flourish despite environmental and economic change.
Darnley Wharf and Breakwater Reconstruction
Harbourside was engaged as the prime consultant by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours, for the design of a replacement structure for an existing marginal wharf, the partial replacement of a breakwater, the design of an abutment for the gangway to the floating docks, and the design of a new anchorage for the floating docks in Darnley, Prince Edward Island. The main objectives were to divest these structures to the Harbour Authority, minimize the impact on adjacent landowners throughout construction, and maintain the uninterrupted operation of the fish processing plant.
