Highway 104 Twinning (Part 3)
The Highway 104 Twinning Project was a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Maintain (DBFOM) project, including twinning the 100 series highway between Sutherlands River and Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with new interchanges and bridges. Working as part of the Dexter Nova Alliance (DNA), Harbourside Engineering Group completed the design of bridge structures, and was awarded the 2025 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Excellence in Engineering for this project.
McNamara Drive Roundabout Design
To improve the traffic flow through Paradise, Newfoundland, a roundabout was planned for the intersection of Topsail Road and McNamara Drive. Harbourside Transportation Consultants provided the design of the new roundabout, which would also grant access to the new Intermediate School in Paradise. The work entailed upgrades to the intersection, the access road, and the services to the new school. The design and construction of the McNamara roundabout helped improve Paradise’ overall road networks and provides accessibility to the new Intermediate School.
Paradise Intermediate School Roundabout Design
Harbourside provided the detailed design of the new roundabout on McNamara Drive for the Paradise Intermediate School in Newfoundland. The work included upgrades to the intersection and the access road, and servicing to the new school in the form of water main installation, storm water collection and conveyance, and wastewater collection. Harbourside created the detailed design of single lane roundabout at the intersection of McNamara Drive and new access road, with the provision of expansion to a multi lane roundabout for the future.
Team Gushue Highway Interchange Study
Harbourside Transportation Consultants was retained by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Transportation and Works to complete a detailed traffic analysis on the Team Gushue Highway and the existing Pitts Memorial Drive and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive interchange. Work began with a review of past transportation planning documents, models, and traffic studies followed by stakeholder consultations to identify regional growth and development projections. The end goal was to develop alternatives for connecting these and ancillary roadways.
Cornwall Interchange Design
The Prince Edward Island Government requested funding from Ottawa to redirect the Trans-Canada Highway around the town of Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, in 2016. Harbourside Transportation Consultants provided consulting design services for the new Trans-Canada Highway bypass, including two roundabouts, connector roads, interchange ramps, and roadways approaching, and in between, the roundabouts. The development of the Cornwall interchange and roundabouts has allowed for heavier traffic to navigate the Cornwall area with ease.
Galway Road Network Design
Harbourside Transportation Consultants was hired in 2015 to provide the consulting design services for the creation of three multi-lane roundabouts in the Galway development of St. John’s, Newfoundland. The developer, two municipalities, the Provincial Department of Transportation, and a municipal services consultant all had to be kept apprised of the development. The Galway development is now accessible through its Mount Pearl connection, improving transportation throughout the city.
Bakers Brook Bridge Replacement Approach
In 2016, Harbourside Transportation Consultants designed the new approach for the replacement of the Bakers Brook Bridge in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, as part of a series of bridge replacements undertaken by Harbourside Engineering Group for Parks Canada. Harbourside completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, from initial concept layouts through to detailed design and tender for the new approach for the Bakers Brook Bridge Replacement.
Rocky Barachois Bridge Replacement Approach
Gros Morne, Newfoundland, continued its series of bridge replacement projects with a focus on the Rocky Barachois Bridge in 2016. Harbourside was contracted to provide detailed concept, design, and tender documents. Harbourside Transportation Consultants completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, while Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants investigated the approaches at this site. The design of the new bridge was undertaken by Harbourside Engineering Consultants, making this project a truly comprehensive endeavour for the group.
Deer Arm Brook Bridge Replacement Approach
The Deer Arm Brook bridge in Gros Morne, Newfoundland, was slotted for replacement in 2016. Harbourside Transportation Consultants completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, from initial concept layouts through to the detailed design and tender for the new approaches for the bridge replacement. Alternative alignment options for reconstructing the approaches for the new bridge were based on the Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads (TAC) for a design speed of 90 kilometers per hour.
MacKenzie River Bridge Replacement
Harbourside Transportation Consultants completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, from initial concept layouts through to detailed design and tender, for the new approaches for the MacKenzie Bridge Replacement in 2016. The objective of the alignment design was to be able to construct the new bridge while maintaining traffic on the existing structure and improving the geometry on the roadway approaches. The updated bridge now meets modern guidelines, making it much safer than its predecessor.
Blackmarsh Road Roundabout
In 2015, Harbourside Transportation Consultants did the detailed design for one of the first roundabouts in the city of St. John’s, Newfoundland. The goal was to accommodate this new piece of modern highway infrastructure in the city. Harbourside collected data points such as traffic flow and cost considerations prior to presenting the detailed design of the Blackmarsh Road roundabout. This redevelopment improved the safety of the intersection and welcomes citizens and residents into the West End along Captain Whalen Drive.
Dicks Brook Bridge Replacement Approach
In 2014, the Dick’s Brook Bridge Replacement project marked the first of several bridge replacement projects in Gros Morne, Newfoundland. Harbourside Transportation Consultants completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, from initial concept layouts through to detailed design and tender for the new approaches. Using detailed design and thorough evaluation, the new bridge is modernized and compliant to TAC guidelines, ensuring safe travel through Newfoundland’s most famous park.
Highway 104 Twinning (Part 2)
As a part of a major initiative by the NS Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal to twin Highway 104 through the town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Harbourside Engineering Consultants received the contract to design six major structures along the new alignment. Harbourside provided preliminary designs of various options for each structure and final designs with tender-ready documents. This monumental task was undertaken by various groups, working in conjunction as the Dexter Nova Alliance.
Highway 104 Twinning (Part 1)
The twinning of Highway 104 comprised of various projects for the roadway's modernization, as twinned highways are safer and more efficient than their single-lane counterparts. Harbourside Engineering Consultants completed the design of the twin overpass structures at the Trunk 7 intersection near St. Francis Xavier University, through Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and received the 2025 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering resulting from work on this project.
Larry Uteck Interchange
The Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal sought to improve the interchange at Larry Uteck Boulevard between Exits 2 and 3 in Bedford. Harbourside Engineering Consultants provided the structural bridge design services for this project. A preliminary design report detailing three fully developed structural options, complete with capital cost estimates and a final recommendation, was provided to NSTIR. The project began in 2008, and construction was completed in the summer of 2010.
