Pointe-Sapin Shore Protection

Structures at the Pointe-Sapin wharf were deteriorated and required repairs or replacement to ensure safe passage and use of this harbour. Harbourside was hired by DFO SCH to develop a tender package to rehabilitate and extend the life of these structures, while protecting the ecologically sensitive areas around the harbour.

Harbourside Engineering provided the preliminary and detailed structural bridge and geotechnical design services for the highway 102 / Highway 107 overpass. This project was awarded the 2025 CISC Award for Excellence in Bridge Design.

Georgetown Harbour Planning & Reconstruction

Harbourside Engineering Consultants was hired by DFO Small Craft Harbours to design a replacement structure for half of the Georgetown pier and a new containment cell to place all the excavated sediments form under the structure footprint. The project’s design phase was complete in 2018, and construction was completed in 2024.

Small craft harbours are the heart of the Maritimes. In 2021, Harbourside was hired by DFO Small Craft Harbours through a Standing Offer to develop two separate tender packages. These were created in order to design and replace the existing marginal wharf structure for the Petit-Cap Harbour, New Brunswick.

Harbourside was retained to provide Erection and Fabrication Engineering and Quality Verification Engineering services. This was for the fabrication, transportation and erection of the steel arch Port Lands bridges. These would be transported by barge from Halifax, all the way to Toronto!

Victoria Bridge Erection

The original Victoria bridge was a two-span structure, built in in 1926. It served as the main arterial connection, connecting Old South and downtown London via Ridout street over the Thames River. After nearly a century of use, the bridge was in need of replacement. The new structure had to include features that would benefit active transportation and consider the effects of climate change and flooding.

Little Harbour (L’Ardoise) Reconstruction

Little Harbour (L’Ardoise) is in Richmond County, NS. This core fishing harbour generally serves up to 25 commercial fishing vessels. Harbourside has provided engineering design and construction services for a number of projects in this harbour, but this project was focused on reconstruction of the Berlin-wall marginal wharf, on the west side of the harbour.

Old Champlain Bridge Deconstruction

The Old Champlain Bridge, joining Brossard to Montréal, Quebec, was open to vehicular traffic from 1962 to 2019. The bridge contained six travel lanes and was the busiest vehicular bridge in Canada upon its closure in 2019. At this point, it was replaced by a new cable stayed bridge. The bridge was replaced due to ongoing structural deterioration, that was deemed economically unmanageable to maintain.

Due to environmental requirements, a new containment cell for dredge spoils was needed at the Saint-Édouard-de-Kent Harbour in Kent County, New Brunswick. Public Services and Procurement and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours, retained Harbourside Engineering for this project in 2021.

Halifax Harbour Bridges : Annual Inspections

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) owns and operates two long span suspension toll bridges, the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge and the A. Murray MacKay Bridge. Harbourside Engineering Consultants has completed annual structural inspections of both suspension bridge structures, along with a variety of ancillary bridge (multi span steel box girder, rigid frame, multi-span voided post tensioned concrete slabs) and retaining structures (cast-in-place cantilever, bin-wall) from 2010 to present.
