Georgetown Harbour Planning & Reconstruction
Harbourside Engineering Consultants was hired by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours, to design a replacement structure for half of the Georgetown Harbour Wharf pier and a new containment cell in Kings County, Prince Edward Island. Our scope for this project included pre-design services, a site investigation and assessment of the existing conditions, and concept designs through options analysis of the potential wharf structures. The design phase was completed in 2018, and construction finished in the spring of 2024.
Cabot Shores: Malpeque Harbour Development
Malpeque Cove Harbour, Prince Edward Island, is a critical area for fisheries and aquaculture, yet accessing the cove through the Damley Channel has proven dangerous for boat passage for many years. Harbourside Engineering Consultants and MRSB Consulting Services Inc. were engaged to conduct an Economic Impact Study and New Wharf Design for the Malpeque Harbour Authority in 2019. The new Cabot Shores Harbour design will help boost the local economy, increase efficiency, and make life easier for local fishing boats and leisure craft.
Darnley Wharf and Breakwater Reconstruction
Harbourside was engaged as the prime consultant by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours, for the design of a replacement structure for an existing marginal wharf, the partial replacement of a breakwater, the design of an abutment for the gangway to the floating docks, and the design of a new anchorage for the floating docks in Darnley, Prince Edward Island. The main objectives were to divest these structures to the Harbour Authority, minimize the impact on adjacent landowners throughout construction, and maintain the uninterrupted operation of the fish processing plant.
Naufrage Breakwater Reconstruction
The Naufrage Breakwater project in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, included the demolition and re-construction of the existing breakwater structure that protects the run from the harbour out to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The project was completed for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours through Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), who hired Harbourside on their behalf to complete the structural design work of a new breakwater to replace the existing structure.
Cornwall Interchange Design
The Prince Edward Island Government requested funding from Ottawa to redirect the Trans-Canada Highway around the town of Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, in 2016. Harbourside Transportation Consultants provided consulting design services for the new Trans-Canada Highway bypass, including two roundabouts, connector roads, interchange ramps, and roadways approaching, and in between, the roundabouts. The development of the Cornwall interchange and roundabouts has allowed for heavier traffic to navigate the Cornwall area with ease.
North Lake Wharf Replacement
The North Lake Wharf Replacement in Prince Edward Island focused on the replacement of Structure 426P when, in 2014, the existing wharf was considered unsafe for use. Harbourside Engineering Consultants was hired by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours to design emergency repairs for the existing timber marginal wharf. After the completion of the emergency repairs, Harbourside was then awarded the design of a replacement structure. The project’s design phase wrapped up in 2015, and construction completed in 2017.
Souris Marine Terminal
The Souris Harbour Authority required engineering and consultation and analysis services in 2012 to evaluate the operations and conditions surrounding the Souris Marine Terminal on Prince Edward Island. Harbourside provided reviews and analyses of the site, permitting modernizations and infrastructure improvements, with the main challenge being the extension of service life for the existing infrastructure. In addition, upgrades to the facility may allow for larger vessels to use the terminal, making it a more versatile facility overall.
Peake’s Quay Marina Retaining Wall Repairs
The Peake’s Quay Marina Retaining Wall consists of steel H piles with tie backs to concrete deadman anchors. The water side flanges of the H piles suffered corrosion and abrasion in the tidal zone, so Harbourside Engineering Consultants was approached by the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation to provide repair details for the water side face of the piles. The maintenance and repairs of these retaining walls ensures that the quay remains in operations and improves the overall safety profile of the area in downtown Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Marie Bridge Alternate Design
The Marie Bridge, located in King’s County Prince Edward Island, is a bridge situated over a small watercourse feeding the St. Peter’s Bay. Working with Highfield Construction, Harbourside Engineering Consultants produced an alternate design for the new structure, featuring integral abutments and reducing the total piling requirements by half. Harbourside designed a temporary detour bridge and detailed the detour alignment around the site, enabling the work on the replacement structure to proceed without interference from traffic.
Skinners Pond Breakwater Repairs
Harbourside was engaged by Public Works and Government Services Canada to develop the concept and to complete the detailed design of repairs to the bulkhead breakwater structure at the Skinner’s Pond Facility, Prince Edward Island, which had severely deteriorated by 2011. The preliminary phase of the work included the assessment of the condition and life expectancy of the existing structure, and Phase II included the detailed design of a new wharf and breakwater design that would meet the required design life and loading requirements of the facility.
PEITIR Bridge Inspection Program
Prince Edward Island Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal adopted a database program called the PEI Bridge Management System (BMS) in 2008, which requires the inspection of all bridges in the system bi-annually. It allows the BMS to highlight a timeline of when each individual structure will require maintenance, major rehabilitation, or replacement. Since 2010, Harbourside Engineering Consultants has been responsible for the detailed inspection of approximately 40 structures bi-annually for PEITIR.
Midgell Bridge Replacement
While working for another consultant in 2006, the principals of Harbourside Engineering Consultants designed a replacement bridge over the Midgell River in King’s County, Prince Edward Island. Harbourside’s deliverables included tender and construction documents for the new bridge, as well as for the temporary supports, construction phasing, and horizontal launch details. Completing the replacement in only two days with minimal highway closures ensured that this main thoroughfare was kept active and traffic was impacted as little as possible.
