Halifax International Airport Stand-by Parking Lot

Harbourside Transportation Consultants were retained by the Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) to complete a review of available options for stand-by parking and to develop a solution to provide additional spaces at the largest airport in Nova Scotia, the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants also conducted the geotechnical investigation portion of this project for quality assurance and control at the project site.

Highway 104 Twinning (Part 3)

The Highway 104 Twinning Project was a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Maintain (DBFOM) project, including twinning the 100 series highway between Sutherlands River and Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with new interchanges and bridges. Working as part of the Dexter Nova Alliance (DNA), Harbourside Engineering Group completed the design of bridge structures, and was awarded the 2025 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Excellence in Engineering for this project.

Peggy’s Cove Infrastructure Improvements

Peggy’s Cove is one of Nova Scotia’s most iconic tourist attractions, drawing approximately 700,000 visitors annually. In recent years, the popularity of Peggy’s Cove has created issues in relation to crowds, traffic, servicing, and vehicular and pedestrian infrastructure. To address this, Develop Nova Scotia commissioned the Peggy’s Cove Master Plan, where Harbourside led the design, tendering and construction management of a variety of infrastructure improvements at Peggy’s Cove. Harbourside, in collaboration with Englobe Corporation, was named the 2023 recipient of the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering for this project.

McNamara Drive Roundabout Design

To improve the traffic flow through Paradise, Newfoundland, a roundabout was planned for the intersection of Topsail Road and McNamara Drive. Harbourside Transportation Consultants provided the design of the new roundabout, which would also grant access to the new Intermediate School in Paradise. The work entailed upgrades to the intersection, the access road, and the services to the new school. The design and construction of the McNamara roundabout helped improve Paradise’ overall road networks and provides accessibility to the new Intermediate School.

Canada Border Services Agency Warehouse

Harbourside carried out a geotechnical investigation for the new Canada Border Services Agency container examination facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The project required multiple specializations, and Harbourside handled the project management in conjunction with the Halifax Port Authority. Harbourside Project Management acted as the owner representative for this project, the associated developments at the PSA maintenance garage, and the South End Container Crane Stowage Foundations, all of which were completed by 2023.

Paradise Intermediate School Roundabout Design

Harbourside provided the detailed design of the new roundabout on McNamara Drive for the Paradise Intermediate School in Newfoundland. The work included upgrades to the intersection and the access road, and servicing to the new school in the form of water main installation, storm water collection and conveyance, and wastewater collection. Harbourside created the detailed design of single lane roundabout at the intersection of McNamara Drive and new access road, with the provision of expansion to a multi lane roundabout for the future.

Team Gushue Highway Interchange Study

Harbourside Transportation Consultants was retained by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Transportation and Works to complete a detailed traffic analysis on the Team Gushue Highway and the existing Pitts Memorial Drive and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive interchange. Work began with a review of past transportation planning documents, models, and traffic studies followed by stakeholder consultations to identify regional growth and development projections. The end goal was to develop alternatives for connecting these and ancillary roadways.

Legion Road and Lawrence Pond Road Upgrades

The Town of Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, identified the need to improve its road network through road upgrades to Legion Road and Lawrence Pond Road. Progressive Engineering & Consulting along with Harbourside Engineering Consultants were chosen to provide comprehensive services for both roadways, with Harbourside handling multiple facets of design and analysis. This included widening the existing cross section by providing a wider travel lane, municipal services upgrades, new curbs and gutters, and a new sidewalk.

Cornwall Interchange Design

The Prince Edward Island Government requested funding from Ottawa to redirect the Trans-Canada Highway around the town of Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, in 2016. Harbourside Transportation Consultants provided consulting design services for the new Trans-Canada Highway bypass, including two roundabouts, connector roads, interchange ramps, and roadways approaching, and in between, the roundabouts. The development of the Cornwall interchange and roundabouts has allowed for heavier traffic to navigate the Cornwall area with ease.

Galway Road Network Design

Harbourside Transportation Consultants was hired in 2015 to provide the consulting design services for the creation of three multi-lane roundabouts in the Galway development of St. John’s, Newfoundland. The developer, two municipalities, the Provincial Department of Transportation, and a municipal services consultant all had to be kept apprised of the development. The Galway development is now accessible through its Mount Pearl connection, improving transportation throughout the city.

City of Corner Brook Traffic Signal Systems

The City of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, retained Harbourside Transportation Consultants in November of 2017 to complete a comprehensive evaluation of the city’s traffic signal systems. The systems consisted of fifteen signalized intersections and five signalized pedestrian crossings. The goal of the study was to document existing conditions at each traffic signal system and to recommend upgrades as required. This helped inform the city on next steps for modernizing roadways and improving accessibility throughout the city.

Gros Morne, Newfoundland, continued its series of bridge replacement projects with a focus on the Rocky Barachois Bridge in 2016. Harbourside was contracted to provide detailed concept, design, and tender documents. Harbourside Transportation Consultants completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, while Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants investigated the approaches at this site. The design of the new bridge was undertaken by Harbourside Engineering Consultants, making this project a truly comprehensive endeavour for the group.

Deer Arm Brook Bridge Replacement Approach 

The Deer Arm Brook bridge in Gros Morne, Newfoundland, was slotted for replacement in 2016. Harbourside Transportation Consultants completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, from initial concept layouts through to the detailed design and tender for the new approaches for the bridge replacement. Alternative alignment options for reconstructing the approaches for the new bridge were based on the Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads (TAC) for a design speed of 90 kilometers per hour.

MacKenzie River Bridge Replacement

Harbourside Transportation Consultants completed the design of the vertical and horizontal alignments, from initial concept layouts through to detailed design and tender, for the new approaches for the MacKenzie Bridge Replacement in 2016. The objective of the alignment design was to be able to construct the new bridge while maintaining traffic on the existing structure and improving the geometry on the roadway approaches. The updated bridge now meets modern guidelines, making it much safer than its predecessor.

Harbourside’s scope of work included information gathering and data collection, trip generation and distribution, existing capacity analysis, conceptualizing the road network and improvements, future capacity analysis, and active transportation considerations.

The goal was to have Harbourside re-classify streets as necessary and create a new town map to illustrate the street reclassifications. The reclassification of streets in Portugal Cove, together with the previous traffic study and traffic calming policy, represents a modernization of the town’s transportation infrastructure.

Harbourside was brought on as transportation engineers in 2016 to address traffic and pedestrian safety issues within the Town of Portugal Cove, St. Philips, Newfoundland. We developed a Traffic Calming Policy with the goal of assisting the Town of Portugal staff in managing traffic calming requests and addressing vehicular and pedestrian safety in a consistent manner. The proper application of the Traffic Calming Policy by town staff ensures that transportation throughout Portugal Cove is safer and more reliable.

Harbourside Transportation Consultants was retained by the Town of Portugal Cove - St. Philips’s, Newfoundland, to develop a Speed Limit Policy, providing guidelines for establishing posted speed limits within the town. The intent of the policy was to ensure that safe speed limits are set, and to strike a balance between convenience, efficiency, energy conservation, and minimizing environmental impact. It outlines the procedure for the review of speed limits on an annual basis, which includes carrying out a program of speed and traffic volume data collection.

Shannon Park Development Traffic Study

Harbourside Transportation Consultants was retained by the Canada Lands Company (CLC) in 2016 to prepare a traffic study for the redevelopment of Shannon Park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Initial meetings took place with the CLC and the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) to confirm the scope of work, and Harbourside reviewed the base information and gathered traffic counts at eight intersections in the study area. We developed a series of recommendations for improvements to accommodate the redevelopment.
