Harbourside Wins OPWA Project of the Year Award at 2026 Luncheon

On May 13, Harbourside’s Nick MacEachern was in attendance at the 2026 Ontario Public Works Association Awards Luncheon. That’s because Harbourside Engineering, in conjunction with the City of Guelph, and Beton Construction, were the recipients of the 2025 Public Works Project of the Year Award for work on the Boathouse Retaining Wall Rehabilitation. As for our role, Harbourside Engineering facilitated the geotechnical investigation, the design, and construction engineering for the retaining wall and additional site features. The category for this award was “Structures Under $2 Million”. Overall, there were 22 award-winning projects, each a triumph in the sector of public work in Ontario.

Small Project, BIG Impact

Receiving this award highlights something important.

Small projects can have the biggest impact on a community.

The Boathouse is a popular destination for Guelph residents during the summer. The adjoining staircase provides citizens with direct access to the water. Not only that, but the Reflecting Garden (a memorial space dedicated to the 1989 École Polytechnique tragedy) is also located next to the Boathouse. These are significant community spaces that require care and maintenance like any other infrastructure.

Where Harbourside Engineering is concerned, rehabilitating a retaining wall like this would be considered a small-scale project. Nevertheless, we recognize the importance of this type of maintenance for local residents and community members. We are proud to have been part of this project.

Together, with the City of Guelph, and Beton Construction, we would like to thank the Ontario Public Works Association for their recognition.
