On Thursday, October 15th, the Canadian Consulting Engineer held its annual awards gala at Toronto’s Palais Royale. This marked the 58th year of the gala celebration being held, highlighting the Canadian engineering industry’s greatest achievements over the past year or so. Only select projects are chosen each year to receive the prestigious Awards of Excellence, divided amongst the categories of “Buildings”, “Transportation”, “Water Resources”, “Natural Resources, Mining, Industry and Energy”, “Special Projects”, “Project Management”, and “In-House Initiatives.”
The team behind the gantry used during the Etobicoke Rail Bridge Replacement holding their award during the 2026 CEE Awards Gala. The team was comprised of members from Construction Demathieu and Bard, and Harbourside Engineering Group. From left to right: Anthony deOliveira (CDB), Guillaume Vanoudheusden (CDB), Calvin MacAulay (HEG), Wade Pottie (HEG), and Michael Chamberlain(CDB).
Our own Wade Pottie and Calvin MacAulay were in attendance, along with a cohort of from Construction Demathieu and Bard. Together, this group comprised the leaders that completed the Etobicoke Rail Bridge Replacement, and who brought a unique Modular Gantry system to life. The Gantry system, and the rail bridge replacement projects in which it was involved, were chosen for this year’s award of excellence in Transportation. This marks the third such Award of Excellence Harbourside has received from the CCE. The others having been awarded for the Burgoyne Bridge Erection in 2017, and the Old Champlain Bridge Deconstruction in 2024 (which was also the recipient of the Schreyer Award).
Two other projects shared this distinguished honour. The Gordie Howe International Bridge (which has been making significant headlines both in the USA and Canada) submitted by AECOM, and the Line 5 Eglinton, completed by AtkinsRéalis and Arcadis. Congratulations to both these incredible projects, and the teams that worked so hard on them. Vision and skill are required for any engineering project, let alone ones of such magnitude and importance. We at Harbourside salute the engineers, drafters, and technicians involved, and congratulate them on their prestigious wins!
Special congratulations are due to Smith + Andersen for their work on the new Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. In addition to receiving an award of excellence in engineering, the project also garnered the coveted Schreyer Award. This marks one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon an engineering project from the CCE. Their project helped to engineer “Canada’s largest geothermal system in a health-care facility”. We humbly commend their incredible efforts and thank them for their service to the engineering profession.
To Wade and Calvin, who fiercely dedicated themselves to the Gantry’s design, and to the completion of both the Etobicoke Rail Bridge Replacement, and the Kapuskasing Rail Bridge Replacement, we congratulate you on your accomplishments. This award is well deserved for all your hard-work, vision, perseverance and determination.
