Marc Tarling and Neil Smith Present at SMSB Conference in Vancouver
Two of our incredible engineers, Neil Smith, and Marc Tarling, presented at the 2026 Short and Medium Span Bridge Conference in Vancouver from August 4th through 7th. The SMSB conference was hosted by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering / La Société canadienne de génie civil at the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel.
Neil Smith P.Eng presented as part of the Integral Bridges, Bearings, Soil-Structure Interaction, and Skew Effects segment on Thursday, August 6th. His talk centered on the work completed on Middle Brook Bridge (Part of the twinning of Highway 104 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia). The presentation, The Use of Integrated Piers and Abutments to Mitigate Lifecycle Costs for 108m Multi Span Bridge, was from 2:30 PM - 2:50 PM. As part of the Dexter Nova Alliance, Harbourside would go on to receive the CCPPP Gold Medal Award for Engineering Excellence (P3 Design and Construction, 2023), as well as the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Engineering Excellence (2025) for its work in twinning of Highway 104.
On Friday, as one of the final presentations of the conference, Marc Tarling discussed the complex work done on the Highway 107/102 Overpass as part of the Special Bridge Systems, Curved Bridges, and Alternative Materials segment. His presentation, titled Analysis, Design, and Constructability of a Curved and Skewed Steel Box Girder Bridge took place at 4:40pm on the last day of the SMSB conference. In 2025, this structure was awarded the CISC steel design award for bridge projects in the Atlantic Region.
