Shubenacadie River Bridge Replacements Project
The Shubenacadie River Bridges were twin 4 span structures, each with a total span of approximately 195 meters, constructed in 1975. Failure of the expansion joints at each end of each bridge allowed salt laden water to spill onto the steel superstructure below. This resulted in excessive corrosion of the ends of the steel box girders. Harbourside identified poor workmanship in the fabrication of the girders as well as overall poor detailing to address fatigue issues.

Dicks Brook Bridge Replacement Approach
In 2014, Gros Morne National Park began the process of replacing the Dick’s Brook Bridge. This would be one of the first in a series of bridge replacements required by the famous park.

Highway 104 Twinning (Part 2)
As a part of a major initiative by NSTIR to twin Highway 104 through the town of Antigonish, Harbourside received the contract to design six major structures along the new alignment.

Indian Sluice Bridge Replacement
The new Indian Sluice bridge replaces a 103-year-old deteriorated structure connecting the mainland to Surette’s Island in Yarmouth, NS.
Vimy Memorial Bridge Erection
The Vimy Memorial Bridge (formerly the Strandherd Armstrong Bridge) is a multiple, space-truss arch bridge that spans across the Rideau River with a concrete deck supported by steel framing that is, in turn, suspended by cables. Harbourside Engineering Consultants (HEC) provided the erection engineering for the project and had developed a unique method to erect the complex structure.
Gateway Bridge Inspection Program
In 2011, Gateway Operations began an Operation, Maintenance, and Rehabilitation (OMR) program for the four-lane, 239 km Route 1 highway. Part of this program requires the bi-annual inspection of 245 structural assets, including overpasses, underpasses, water crossings, viaducts, culverts, retaining walls, and overhead sign structures.

Marie Bridge Alternate Design
The Marie Bridge, located in King’s County Prince Edward Island, is a bridge situated over a small watercourse feeding the St. Peter’s Bay.
Macdonald Bridge Foundation Retrofit
As part of the deck replacement of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, the existing bridge elements to remain in service were analyzed for the new loading conditions.

Wagner Brook Bridge
In 2013, Harbourside worked with Alvan Construction to design the new Wagner Brook bridge in Queen’s County.
Fletcher Hebb Bridge Replacement
The original Fletcher Hebb Bridge was a simple span steel girder structure with reinforced concrete deck and abutments. The original structure had reached the end of its service life and was in need of immediate replacement.

Magaguadavic River Bridge Demolition
The existing Magaguadavic River Bridge was a 3 span continuous 3 cell cast in place reinforced concrete box structure. It spanned the Magaguadavic River close to Saint George, NB. This bridge was replaced with a new adjacent structure as part of the Gateway project twinning Route 1.

Highway 104 Twinning (Part 1)
The twinning of Highway 104 was a massive undertaking. Various projects were completed by an alliance of engineers and construction contractors working to modernize 63 km of critical highway infrastructure. As part of this monumental effort, Harbourside completed the design of the twin overpass structures at Trunk 7 intersection.

Waverley Road Rapid Bridge Replacements
Waverley Road is a high traffic density artery for commuters traveling from Waverley to Halifax/Dartmouth. Harbourside Engineering Consultants was hired to develop and design panel bridge abutments for two separate structures.

Northport Bridge Replacement Alternate
After tender and award, HEC was hired by Alva Construction to provide a value engineering alternate design for the replacement of the Northport Bridge that spans the Shinimicas River in Cumberland County along Route 366.

Little Bras d’Or Cofferdam, Trestle and Bridge Replacement
Local tourism in the Little Bras D’Or area is dependent on the access provided by the Little Bras D’Or bridge. It acts as the only non-load related link to the Newfoundland ferry in North Sydney. As the bridge was in a deteriorated state, it was slated for replacement in 2010.

Canal Bridge Replacement
The Canal Bridge over Rights River in Antigonish is an important connector for the community. As part of the main street that bisects the town, it acts as an integral transportation artery. Unfortunately, by 2008, the aging structure needed to be replaced. Harbourside completed the design of the new bridge in 2009. Construction was then done during the 2010 and 2011 construction seasons.

Chéticamp River Bridge Replacement
The former Cheticamp River Bridge consisted of a four simple span riveted steel girder, reinforced concrete deck superstructure, founded on three in-river concrete piers and concrete abutments and retaining walls located at each end of the bridge. The structure underwent several stages of rehabilitation, but in 2006 after a detailed inspection it was recommended that the 73-meter-long structure be completely replaced.

Sangster Bridge Demolition
In 2010, Habourside was working with Dexter Construction on the demolition of the Sangster Bridge. The original demolition plan proposed providing a temporary in-water support and lifting the bridge out in two sections.

PEITIR Bridge Inspection Program
Since 2010, Harbourside Engineering Consultants has been an integral part of the PEI bridge inspection program. HEC is responsible for the detailed inspection of approximately 40 structures bi-annually for PEITIR.

Larry Uteck Interchange
In response to the rapid growth of the both the Bedford South and the Bedford West communities, the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal sought to improve the interchange at Larry Uteck Boulevard between Exits 2 and 3. The project began in 2008, and the new interchange was opened in 2010.
