Shubenacadie River Bridge Replacements Project

The Shubenacadie River Bridges were twin 4 span structures, each with a total span of approximately 195 meters, constructed in 1975. Failure of the expansion joints at each end of each bridge allowed salt laden water to spill onto the steel superstructure below. This resulted in excessive corrosion of the ends of the steel box girders. Harbourside identified poor workmanship in the fabrication of the girders as well as overall poor detailing to address fatigue issues.

Vimy Memorial Bridge Erection

The Vimy Memorial Bridge (formerly the Strandherd Armstrong Bridge) is a multiple, space-truss arch bridge that spans across the Rideau River with a concrete deck supported by steel framing that is, in turn, suspended by cables. Harbourside Engineering Consultants (HEC) provided the erection engineering for the project and had developed a unique method to erect the complex structure.

Gateway Bridge Inspection Program

In 2011, Gateway Operations began an Operation, Maintenance, and Rehabilitation (OMR) program for the four-lane, 239 km Route 1 highway. Part of this program requires the bi-annual inspection of 245 structural assets, including overpasses, underpasses, water crossings, viaducts, culverts, retaining walls, and overhead sign structures.

The existing Magaguadavic River Bridge was a 3 span continuous 3 cell cast in place reinforced concrete box structure. It spanned the Magaguadavic River close to Saint George, NB. This bridge was replaced with a new adjacent structure as part of the Gateway project twinning Route 1.

The twinning of Highway 104 was a massive undertaking. Various projects were completed by an alliance of engineers and construction contractors working to modernize 63 km of critical highway infrastructure. As part of this monumental effort, Harbourside completed the design of the twin overpass structures at Trunk 7 intersection.

Canal Bridge Replacement

The Canal Bridge over Rights River in Antigonish is an important connector for the community. As part of the main street that bisects the town, it acts as an integral transportation artery. Unfortunately, by 2008, the aging structure needed to be replaced. Harbourside completed the design of the new bridge in 2009. Construction was then done during the 2010 and 2011 construction seasons.

Chéticamp River Bridge Replacement

The former Cheticamp River Bridge consisted of a four simple span riveted steel girder, reinforced concrete deck superstructure, founded on three in-river concrete piers and concrete abutments and retaining walls located at each end of the bridge. The structure underwent several stages of rehabilitation, but in 2006 after a detailed inspection it was recommended that the 73-meter-long structure be completely replaced.

Larry Uteck Interchange

In response to the rapid growth of the both the Bedford South and the Bedford West communities, the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal sought to improve the interchange at Larry Uteck Boulevard between Exits 2 and 3.  The project began in 2008, and the new interchange was opened in 2010.
