Harbourside Expands Geotechnical and Materials Testing Services

A Decade of Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants

For many years, our CCIL certified materials lab was located next to our head office in Dartmouth. With a decade of projects behind it, this space served as a pillar for major infrastructure development across Canada. It served Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants materials and testing needs well for our entire history.

The geotechnical engineering consulting division of Harbourside was founded in 2016. Since then, this division has experienced constant, steady growth. Our concrete and materials services widened even further with the acquisition of W.S. Langley Concrete and Materials in 2024. After 10 years of regular growth, Harbourside Engineering is now home to some of the most comprehensive materials testing facilities available in eastern Canada.

But to accommodate these services, we needed a new space.

And so, earlier this year, our materials team said goodbye to the main office location in order to expand.

Expanding our Materials Testing Services

Although our Dartmouth office is still home to many of our geotechnical engineers, our laboratory services have now bid a tearful farewell to our old stomping grounds.

We will always be nostalgic for lunch at the Mic Mac Tavern, and Friday evenings at Nine Locks Brewery.

Thankfully, our new facility isn’t that far: located at Bluewater Road, in Bedford Nova Scotia.

With the opening of our new laboratory, we have more than doubled our capacity. This new space has allowed for us to better handle the ever-growing demand for materials and geotechnical engineering services across the eastern seaboard. With projects reaching the west coast, and as far south as the Caribbean Sea, our new laboratory allows us to service more projects than ever before.

At over 60 staff working fulltime within the lab, the new space permits us to offer a greater range of materials testing services for our clients. This also enables us to be more responsive to increased demand for those services.

Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants, together with W.S. Langley Concrete and Materials Technology, offer one of the most comprehensive suites of materials testing, and Geotechnical services available in eastern Canada.

Mobile Labs

In addition to our larger laboratory space, Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants also deploys mobile lab units to the field. These provide a more limited range of testing options but enable a high level of responsiveness for projects that require onsite access.

Celebrating the New Lab Space

With the advent of the August long-weekend in Nova Scotia, Harbourside’s Geotechnical and Materials division hosted a little get together at the new lab. Tours were given to the other divisions who might not yet have seen the new space. In true harbourside fashion, there was also a barbeque out front. Though the transition to the new space was happening throughout the spring, this was the first chance our divisions had to celebrate this next step together.
