Project Description

Harbourside provided the design of the new roundabout on McNamara Drive for the new Intermediate School in Paradise. The work not only included the upgrade to the intersection but also the access road and servicing to the new school. This servicing included water main installation, storm water collection/conveyance, and wastewater collection.

Harbourside’s Role

Detailed design of the new access road to the school was developed by harbourside. The designw as multifaceted, and included rock and common excavation, new road alignments, multi-use trail, water main, storm and sanitary sewer system, and intersections with the school. The roundabout would serve as the main entrance to a school, meaning it would accommodate school buses, vehicular traffic, and many young pedestrians.

Harbourside coordinated and acquired all necessary geotechnical information and topographic survey to assist with the design. We created the detailed design of single lane roundabout at the intersection of McNamara Drive and new access road, with the provision of expansion to a multi lane roundabout for the future. The future expansion was included by designing multi-lane geometry and constructing the ultimate footprint of the roundabout and modifying the splitter islands to operate with single lane entries.

Unique Challenges

Provision of access had to be kept in mind for the adjacent properties such as the Community Centre, the Carpenters College, the soccer facility and vacant lots. In addition, special consideration was given to future development, hence the plan for multi-lane geometry in the base design.

Social Impact

Focusing on safety-first design and evaluation was paramount where so many children and youth would be present. Optimizing for safety ensures we live up to our core design philosophy: “Everyone gets home safe”
