Project Description
The Town of Conception Bay South had identified the need to improve its road network through two road upgrades, Legion Road and Lawrence Pond Road. The Town selected Harbourside along with Progressive Engineering & Consulting to provide comprehensive services for both roadways. This included widening the existing cross section by providing a wider travel lane, municipal services upgrades, new curbs and gutters, and a new sidewalk.
Harbourside’s Role
Harbourside handled multiple facets of design and analysis for this project. Despite the tight deadline, together with PEC, Harbourside was able to complete the design phase in time for tendering and construction. This work included:
Detailed design of both road alignments and cross section upgrades. Provided the most efficient designs to reduce land acquisition and the relocation of overhead power lines.
Designing and optimizing vertical and horizontal alignments, and cross sections in accordance with Department of
Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs Specifications and the TAC Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads. All design work completed using latest version of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Stormwater drainage design.
Assessed and implemented Traffic Calming methods throughout the design process.
Field investigations were conducted outlining residential property issues, traffic diversion routes, and to outline all overhead and underground utilities with respective affected companies.
Tendering and Construction
During tendering phase, reviewed all contractors’ questions, issued clarifications, evaluated tenders and provided recommendation of award.
During construction phase, Harbourside was readily available to provide interpretation, direction and solutions regarding any issues that arose.
Unique Challenges
In order to ensure the project would reach the tendering and construction phase in time for the 2018 season, Harbourside had to work quickly and efficiently. Given that we were also partnered with Progressive Engineering & Consulting, this also meant that communication had to be as effective as possible. With two groups working on the same project, everyone had to be on the same page. Project management was key in order to deliver quality designs that would most benefit the Town of Conception Bay
Social Impact
Despite the tight turn-around, Harbourside was able to deliver detailed design drawings in time for construction tendering. The completion of this project has helped to modernize transportation infrastructure in the area. The upgraded sidewalks have also made active transportation safer and more reliable.
