Raising the Bar at Every Turn
Engineering Design and Innovation
Every project that Harbourside undertakes is backed by our commitment to engineering excellence. Our work is characterized by thorough communication and comprehensive design. We see the whole picture. At every step, Harbourside redefines the meaning of quality engineering. With seasoned professionals from every sector of the industry, we are able to solve even the most technically challenging projects. Both throughout Atlantic Canada, and on the international stage, our work has been recognized by highest supervising bodies. The award-winning projects below are a testament to the calibre of the engineering performed at Harbourside.
Ramp 9 Structure Demolition and Overload Analysis, Halifax Approach
This project entailed the detailed demolition design of a post-tensioned concrete box structure in the North end of Halifax, adjacent to the MacKay Bridge (one of the two large suspension bridges crossing Halifax Harbour).

Demolition of Fairview Overpass
In 2009, the Fairview overpass was slated for demolition. The bridge was set to be redesigned and replaced due to the age and condition of the existing structure. This was coupled with the fact that the structure was similar in construction to that of the highway overpass in Laval Quebec that collapsed in 2006. The critical detail of concern was the bearing support corbel for the middle drop in span that was lightly reinforced and inaccessible for proper condition surveys.

Tufts Cove Cooling Water Intake Structure, Floating Analysis
As part of an overall circulating water improvement at the Nova Scotia Power Tufts Cove site in Halifax Harbour, NS Dexter Construction engaged Harbourside Engineering Consultants to conduct a floating analysis of the large concrete intake structure that was fabricated on the Halifax side of the Harbour…

Highfield Park Pedestrian Bridge
In 2009, the Halifax Regional Municipality recognized the need for a pedestrian crossing across Highway 111 from Highfield Park to the Burnside Industrial Park. This area is known for its heavy traffic. A break in the active transportation network at such a crucial point posed a significant safety risk.

Alternate Dock Facility Viaduct, Marine Atlantic
The Alternate Dock Facility Viaduct at Port Aux Basques is unique among Harbourside’s projects. This is because the principals of HEC, Robbie Fraser, MSc., P.Eng. and Greg MacDonald, P.Eng., completed the detailed design of the Alternate Dock while still employed at CBCL Limited!

Spanks River Bridge
In 2008, a single lane aging through truss bridge was damaged by a snowplough in rural Nova Scotia. Due to the condition of the existing structure, it necessitated rapid replacement.

Davison Bridge
Although many projects happen congruently, each taking years from design to completion, the Davison Bridge is special. It is special in that it was the first project to be fully completed by Harbourside Engineering Consultants after its founding in 2008! This project set the course for the company, proving we could provide value engineering to our clients in a timely and thoughtful manner.
Moriah Bridges Self Launching Bridge Erection
This 110 m long self launching erection gantry was designed to erect three multi-span precast segmental concrete box girder bridges using the balanced cantilever method of construction.
Midgell Bridge Replacement
While working for another consultant, the Principals of Harbourside Engineering Consultants designed a replacement bridge over the Midgell River. The bridge is located on the busiest highway on Prince Edward Island.
