Project Description

In 2012, the Souris Harbour Authority required engineering consultations and analysis services. The goal was to evaluate the operations and conditions surrounding the Souris Marine Terminal, and potential future upgrades to the facility.

Harbourside’s Role

Harbourside provided engineering services for several items at the Souris Marine Terminal.

The projects included:

·       a review of permissible draft at the north berth,

·       a review of permissible deck loading at the north berth,

·       a review of a specific offloading operation at the north berth

·       a review of the existing condition of the breakwater and recommendations for remediation.

The work also included a structural analysis of the existing SSP wall to determine the feasibility of dredging in front of the wall. From there, options and concept structural arrangements were examined to allow deeper draft for larger vessels. Harbourside also developed a concept construction methodology for the breakwater repairs. Finally, Harbourside conducted the structural analysis of the existing SSP wall with the goal of determining large surcharge loads associated with a crane off-loading operation. The structural analysis incorporated the results of an SSP ultrasonic thickness measurement program.

Unique Challenges

The main challenge for this facility was extending the service life of the existing infrastructure. Another challenge was phasing the rehabilitation work to fit within the Harbour Authorities annual budget. By understanding the client priorities, we developed a rehabilitation plan which help them achieve their goal of extending the useful service life of their infrastructure.

Social Impact

The thorough analysis provided by Harbourside permits the Souris Marine Terminal to modernize and improve a vast array of infrastructure. In addition, upgrades to the facility may allow for larger vessels to use the terminal, making it a more versatile facility overall.
