Project Description

The Canal Bridge over Rights River in Antigonish is an important connector for the community. As part of the main street that bisects the town, it acts as an integral transportation artery. Unfortunately, by 2008, the aging structure needed to be replaced.

The Canal Bridge, after construction, located over the Rights River in Antigonish.

Harbourside’s Role

Harbourside completed the design of the new bridge in 2009. Construction was then done during the 2010 and 2011 construction seasons.

This single span bridge structure carries Main Street traffic over Rights River and consists of 1.2 m deep, 40 m single span triple trapezoidal steel box girders supported on semi-integral / skewed (30 degrees) concrete abutments founded on steel piles. Design and construction was completed successfully at a difficult downtown site with large traffic volumes, multiple buried and overhead services and in close proximity to businesses and residences. The design of an on-site detour structure was part of the scope of work. Several cost-effective aesthetic details were included in the design resulting in a one-of-a-kind structure that has been positively received by residents.

Unique Challenges

Notably, the bridge’s location posed some logistical challenges during construction. Thorough mitigation strategies had to be employed so as to reduce the impact on local traffic and congestion.

In addition, the town of Antigonish has a unique and well-known character. This had to be reflected in the aesthetics of the bridge. Although modernization was essential, the bridge had to embrace the historic charm of the town. The result is a beautiful structure with many unique features worthy of such a historic and eye-catching region.

Social Impact

The canal bridge over the Rights River is an essential piece of infrastructure for the town of Antigonish. Its replacement, and the upgrades its pedestrian access, ensures that traffic will continue to flow safely throughout the town for years to come.
